Problem solving

Overview

During my college years, I often created marketing materials for events. This process was time-consuming, and most peers and professors struggled with design tools. Observing this problem, I designed a solution to enable non-designers to create event landing pages quickly and effortlessly.

The Problem

  • Non-designers, including students and professors, found design tools difficult to use.

  • Designing posters and marketing materials consumed significant time.

  • Professors often wanted to make quick edits but lacked the skills to do so.

  • Familiar tools like Google Forms were easier for them to use but didn’t meet design needs.

The Solution

I designed an event landing page editor where users could:

  1. Input event details through a simple, form-based interface.

  2. Use a pre-designed, fixed template to avoid decision fatigue.

  3. Preview and publish the landing page with minimal steps.

This editor leveraged familiarity with form-based tools like Google Forms while eliminating the need for complex design knowledge.

Key Features

  1. Step-by-Step Process

    • Users follow a guided flow to input event details.

    • Ensures simplicity and avoids overwhelming them.

  2. Pre-Defined Templates

    • Fixed templates provide consistency and ease of use.

    • Reduces decision-making for non-designers.

  3. Live Preview

    • Users can see how the landing page will look before publishing.

    • Increases confidence and minimizes errors.

  4. Publish Quickly

    • The final page is ready to share as a simple, attractive website.

Design Challenges

  1. Keeping the UI Simple

    • Focused on minimal design elements and familiar UX patterns.

    • Avoided unnecessary features to prioritize usability.

  2. Fixed Template

    • Balanced functionality and simplicity by offering limited customization.

  3. Limited User Testing

    • Relied on first-hand experience and observations instead of formal testing.

Outcome & Impact

Although the project hasn’t been developed yet, it has the potential to:

  • Save time for non-designers by automating the creation of event landing pages.

  • Empower users, including professors and students, to publish materials without external help.

  • Reduce reliance on complex tools, making event promotions faster and easier.

Lessons Learned

  1. Designing for Non-Designers

    • Simplicity is key. Familiar, step-by-step interfaces work best.

  2. Balancing Functionality and Usability

    • Limited customization can often improve usability for a specific audience.

  3. Problem-Solving Through Observation

    • Real-life struggles provide valuable insights for impactful design solutions.
